According to James McQuivey’s Forrester study, How Video Will Take Over the World, “Video is worth 1.8 million words.”

With video content booming on social media right now, there’s never been a better time to get started, if you haven’t already.

I often hear people say they are ‘scared’ of video. They don’t want to show their faces on camera, they don’t know what to say, don’t want to talk about. Or just don’t have the right equipment.

Well you know what I’m going to say don’t you?

Balderdash!

Like photography content, there’s so many options you can choose when making video content. A tripod, your smartphone and a handful of apps can be all you need to get started.

And yes video is for everyone. Whatever size your business is. Whether you’re a blogger, crafter, bag seller, car seller, dog grooming consultant, hi-wire trapeze artist. Video is your friend.

9 Video Content Ideas for Instagram

1. Explainer - Joe Wicks found popularity and Instagram fame with his simple #leanin15 receipe videos. In under 15 seconds, he explains how to create a healthy meal, quickly and easily. These videos are a perfect example of how your video content doesn’t need to be complicated.

2. Product Demonstrations - save people time by showing them your product or service in action. The art & craft community on Instagram have this nailed. Like my Insta pal Katie Robbins @ceramicmagpie above.

3. DIY/How To - as we saw in the stats, people are likely to buy a product after seeing a video. Be useful. Share a recipe. Show people how to use your product. Take inspiration from 5 Min Crafts on Instagram and you’ll understand why they have 26 million followers!

4. Stop Motion Animation - not only can you create magic with stop motion animation but it also adds such personality to any product. Animation is also a great way of taking concepts and information and simplifying them.

For example the stop motion animation above is one I created for Club Med to describe how skiers can literally step out of their beds and onto the ski slopes.

5. Raise Awareness - Video is a great way of raising awareness about an important cause or event. Ben and Jerry’s used a simple video to raise awareness and encourage people to visit their blog, to read about of how they are helping refugees in the US.

6. Have Fun - This is so important! Have fun with your video content. The Dollar Shave Club recently went out on Valentines day to give random strangers a rose. This video will make you smile.

7. Meet the Team - Influencer marketing team Whalar, have a great series where they interview team members. It really helps get us get to know the faces and personality behind the brand. Adding to the trust factor.

8. User Generated Video - Utilise your audience and the talented Instagram community. National Geographic will often feature fascinating videos shot by other Instagram users from around the world, video content that they otherwise wouldn’t have access to.

9. Instagram stories of course! If you’re not quite ready to post video to your feed, start experimenting with Instagram stories.

Each story slide is 15 seconds long and disappears after 24 hours. Record a talking head (literally you chatting to the camera), boomerangs, reverse video or go live if you’re feeling brave. Instagram stories are a great way to start with video content on Instagram.
